Filtration

 

Filtration in one form or another is the most common single unit operation found in water treatment plants around the world. 

 

The majority of design projects provided by SLS Technology Pty Ltd for water treatment plant involve our core component and experience with polishing filtration.  Our substantial experience and operating knowhow for polishing filtration plant design covers the common forms of water polishing filtration including media bed, membrane barrier and pre-coat systems. 

 

Each filtration concept has its pros and cons and a great diversity of design options make comparison of water filtering technologies a challenging task, even for an engineer.  In addition, recent technology advances are improving most filter designs and auxiliary treatment equipment making them attractive and applicable to a wider range for applications and requiring review of old age assumptions and textbook opinions.

Mineral Processing Hydrometallurgy

Hydrometallurgy covers all water-based processes for obtaining metals or mineral concentrates from their ores or recycled metals.  It is a subset within the field of extractive metallurgy involving the application of many fields of technical and engineering expertise.  A hydrometallurgist is typically a jack of all the technical trades, as the profession requires skill across a broad knowledge spectrum!

SLS designs aquatic facility water treatment systems with either media bed or pre coat pool filters manufactured from high grade fibreglass and exotic steel alloys for maximum durability.  Across the swimming pool industry, media bed water filters remain the most popular choice on the market for their durability, simplicity in maintenance and recent significant water filtration technology advances.  Depending on the choice of media and filtration design flux, this technology can filter out 0.01 micron particles and textile media bed filters can accept sand sized contaminants. Sand and zeolite media will typically last between 1 and 5 years whereas modern age textile media will last 10 times that length.

Leachate Treatment Systems

Polluted landfill leachate water can contain a wide range of metallic and organic contaminants in varying concentrations.  This does pose a challenge to the average engineer as no two leachate solutions, climates and treated water quality objectives are technically identical. 

 

SLS Technology Pty Ltd have proven leachate treatment design capability in Australia and New Zealand with a record of sensible design development for leachate water treatment providing quality consulting support to customers in various different locations and climates.  Our services range from front end process test studies and design, and we frequently perform treatability studies, plant audits, process reviews and design work for new leachate treatment processes.

 

Dissolved Air Flotation

DAF water treatment equipment is usually one process component for treating industrial or municipal wastewater.  DAF units are typically associated with pre and post treatment requirements, such as polishing filtration of the clarified water stream or sludge treatment thickening or belt filtration, thermal destruction or biological digestion.

SLS Technology Pty Ltd has consulting experience with several different flotation processing units, from rotational air entrainment systems to compressed air injection designs.  Our capabilities cover all pre requisite dosing such as flocculant activation, coagulant addition, oxidation and pH control.  Over the years we have provided studies analysing the impact of contaminant fats, oils, solvents, and suspended solids concentration on dissolve air flotation operating efficiency and the impact of these contaminants plus water salinity on optimum dissolved air flotation tank design.

 

Acid Mine Drainage

The phenomenon of Acid Mine Drainage (and Acid Rock Drainage) presents a degree of technical challenge for the water treatment engineer due to the combination of chemical parameters involved.

 As consultants SLS Technology Pty Ltd have been involved in and seen many different forms of Acid Mine Drainage.  The least costly and often the most effective method of controlling Acid Mine Drainage is to prevent its initial formation, but from our experience we understand that this is not always practical.   Passive biological processes may appear attractive on cost but can have severe climate related limitations and generally require huge water storage on site to meet the required long residence time.

Many countries have guidelines for the assessment of the potential for Acid Mine Drainage but these do not cover all scenarios, thus technical knowhow is most helpful if not essential.  The treatment cost prediction for Acid Mine Drainage is an essential component of any mine site environment management plan and environment impact license for which an experienced water treatment consultant in this field, such as SLS Technology Pty Ltd can assist.

AMD water can have a very high total acid value due to potential for high concentrations of dissolved metals, sulphate, carbonates and other anions that provide significant buffering potential.   In addition its corrosion index rating of AMD water can often be an order of magnitude beyond the prediction window of recognised corrosion indexes.  Thus treatment costs and equipment selections, such as non corrosive pump impeller and design of the sacrificial anode system can be unpredictable unless a quality investigative testing is performed by an experienced AMD treatment specialist.

As there are numerous AMD conditions each with its own treatment rate requirement, logistics, manpower, footprint and geographic factors; there are likewise as many different optimum and economic AMD water treatment strategies.  For example, history presents many observations where a simple Arsenic removal process works at one mine site buy is a miserable failure at another. 

SLS Technology Pty Ltd has consulting and operational experience with a range of both chemical and biological AMD treatment processes.  Chemical and biological AMD treatment processes can then be divided into rapid or passive treatments.  For example, treatment with metallurgical lime putty is considered a rapid process whilst treatment via a crushed limestone drain is considered passive; treatment via a computer controlled autogenous bioreactor is a rapid process relative to a passive floating wetland treatment or constructed wetlands.

In addition to the simplistic pH neutralisation and physical separation of toxic metals, SLS Technology Pty Ltd has Acid Mine Drainage consulting experience in the design and implementation of post treatment processes such as membrane RO, valuable metal recovery via Nano Filtration osmosis and desalination via thermal and Reverse Osmosis methods for Zero Liquid Discharge process requirements.

SLS Technology Pty Ltd has experience with both single step and multiple unit processing AMD plants.  Most Acid Mine Drainage treatment processes involve either calcium or sodium alkali chemicals, but there are others that may worth a review.  Many parameters combine to dictate the level of sophistication of the treatment system required.  Whilst simplistic methods target only the pH neutralisation, dual and multiple step processes can be required to address high residual solubility of toxic substances such as Arsenic, Lead, radioactive ions or other metals and total salinity.  In addition, residual hardness if a calcium alkali is used or unacceptable electro conductivity from high sulphate concentration remains if a caustic alkali is applied can be an issue after the neutralisation depending on the intended use of the treated water or site specific environment regulations.

Disinfection and Sterilisation

Disinfection and Sterilisation are critical quality steps in a vast number of water treatment processes.  Chemical disinfections methods include Chlorination, Ozonation, Hydrogen Peroxide or Permanganate processes whilst photolytic methods of UV and sunlight are equally common. Did you know there are a number of different Chlorine compounds that are applied for water sterilisation?  Each has unique advantages and inimitable shortcomings.

Cooling Tower Water Treatment

 

SLS Technology Pty Ltd has been providing cooling tower water services for over 20 years for both small manual dose towers to large fully automated thermal control plants.  A key component is our comprehensive service delivery and expertise in chemical, filtration and disinfection technologies required with thermal control applications.

 

Cooling Tower Water Treatment is an integral part of process operations in many industries and also essential for climate control of municipal high rise buildings.  Cooling Tower operators face the possibility of productivity and product quality being adversely affected by scale, corrosion, fouling and microbiological contamination.

 

Cooling towers need to be operated within a hygienic and safe water quality window.  This ideal window has a very low tolerance for suspended solids as suspended solids; be they mineral or biological material foul the transfer of heat energy within the tower.  Media bed filtration is generally an ideal technology for maintaining suitable water clarity within the recirculating water.  However, there are cases were a higher quality membrane filtration is required.  With appropriate chemical and filtration virtually any water can be used for a cooling tower.

Filters can help extend the life of and lower the maintenance on your sprinkler system whilst maintaining the flow in drip systems.  Filtration is essential to prevent emitters from becoming plugged.  Even if small sand particles such as those from a ground bore can pass through your system without clogging it they will cause wear on the equipment including damage to automatic valves.
