Electrolysis

Whilst electrolysis processes can be designed to be very robust machines, water quality is a critical parameter for the long term efficiency of any electrolysis equipment.  For example, excessive contaminants can cause a range of problems from short circuiting to membrane fouling.  Pre-treatment usually including filtration is essential for most electrolysis applications.

Electrolysis is the application of an electric potential difference across two electrodes in water.  If the electric charge differential is sufficient it will cause simultaneous electron transfer reactions at both anode and cathode. 

 

SLS’s hydrometallurgical electrolysis experience covers the common forms of electroplating, electrowinning and electro-refining found at mine sites and metal refineries. 

Water Treatment Electrolysis provides a subtlety wider array of applications though based on identical solution and electrical principles.

Electrochlorination:

This technique is very popular in the swimming pool industry.  However there are a range of different anode materials and designs available nowadays which result in either direct or indirect formation of a Chlorine, Bromine or Iodine oxidant chemical and thus the technology is a cost effective application in many different industries.

These modern developments in anode materials are enabling direct electro chlorination in low salinity water, for example at least two anode materials will work in potable water salinity.

Electro-Oxidation:

An Electro-Oxidation process causes a soluble or substance suspended in the water to specifically react when in contact with the anode. This application does not necessarily form an oxidant chemical in the water. SLS has design and operational familiarity with a range of different anode materials. Standard size and bespoke designed machines are availablen.

 

Electrocoagulation:

Electroflotation is an alternative to or a subset of a DAF type separation process.

Electroflotation processes apply an electric current that generates bubbles at one or both electrodes.  As in all DAF processes, as the bubbles rise contaminants adhere to the gas and are removed by the flotation process.  A range of different capacity machines are available and can be retrofitted to existing machines.

Electro Dialysis:

Water dialysis is an economically attractive technology for desalination of low to medium saline water and process liquors. 

It is a cheaper process than RO membrane operation when the salinity is within or just above potable water salinity guidelines.

 

An ElectroDialysis separation process is created by applying a static electric field across parallel chambers divided by cation and anion specific membranes.

 

Electro-Membrane Plant:

An Electro-Membrane process applies a membrane surface between the anode and cathode thus creating two separate chambers.  This ensures the oxidant formed in the anode chamber does not react with the contents in the cathode chamber and cannot short circuit to the cathode
